SUMMARY:Tribute to Frances Langford
DESCRIPTION:\nPERMANENT EXHIBIT\n\n\n\nAmerica’s Sweetheart: Julia Frances Langford\n\n\n\nJulia Frances Langford was far more than a generous philanthropist—she was a national treasure and a hometown hero whose legacy continues to inspire.\n\n\n\nBorn in Lakeland, Florida in 1913, Frances Langford rose to fame in the 1930s and ’40s as a celebrated singer, actress, and radio star. With her rich contralto voice and warm stage presence, she earned the nickname “America’s Sweetheart of Song.” She became a household name through her regular performances on radio programs such as The Bickersons and the Bob Hope Show, and she starred in more than two dozen films, including Broadway Melody of 1936, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and Every Night at Eight.\n\n\n\nDuring World War II, Langford brought hope and comfort to U.S. troops around the globe as part of the USO tours, often alongside Bob Hope. Her rendition of “I’m in the Mood for Love” became an anthem of affection and longing for millions of servicemen far from home.\n\n\n\nAfter retiring from show business, Frances settled in Martin County with her husband, broadcaster Ralph Evinrude. Here, she transformed her love of community into extraordinary acts of generosity. Through the Frances Langford Foundation, she donated over $29 million to support local charities, educational programs, and cultural institutions. Her beneficiaries included the Florida Oceanographic Society, the Elliott Museum, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County.\n\n\n\nShe gave more than money—she gave heart and vision to the region. Frances donated land for Langford Park, helped build community centers, and funded vital healthcare facilities like the Frances Langford Heart Center at Martin Health.\n\n\n\nToday, we are proud to preserve and share her memory. The Elliott Museum is home to a curated collection of her memorabilia, Hollywood costumes, records, photographs, and personal items—a tribute to a woman whose talents and compassion knew no bounds.\n\n\n\nFrances Langford’s voice touched the world. Her legacy continues to uplift her community.\n\n\n\nWe are forever grateful for her generous spirit.\n\n\n\nALL EXHIBITS ARE INCLUDED WITH REGULAR ADMISSIONS\n
