The Highwaymen, from the Street corner to the Smithsonian

Opening Sunday, November 23, 2025

Spanning nearly 70 years, a group of 25 African American men and 1 remarkable woman—later known as The Highwaymen—made an indelible mark not only on Florida, but on the art world.

In the 1950s, when segregation and limited opportunities stood in their way, these self-taught artists painted Florida’s untouched beauty—windswept beaches, fiery red poinciana trees, glistening lagoons, swaying palms, and endless skies. Armed with house paint and inexpensive Upson board, they created scenes full of light, color, and movement, selling their works from the trunks of their cars along Florida highways.

Against all odds, their art became sought after, eventually gaining national recognition and even a place in the Smithsonian Institution. Today, their paintings are valued more than ever, celebrated as authentic windows into Florida’s past.

The Elliott Museum is honored to present From the Street Corner to the Smithsonian, featuring over 60 original paintings from the private collection of Roger Lightle, Highwaymen Art Specialists, Inc. Many will also be available for purchase.

Don’t miss this chance to experience the history, resilience, and beauty of Florida through the eyes of The Highwaymen.
