Grumman’s Legacy

PERMANENT EXHIBIT

Grumman’s legacy is etched not only in the annals of aerospace innovation but also in the heart of Martin County. Known for its engineering excellence and legendary aircraft like the F-14 Tomcat, Grumman’s presence at Plant 77 and Witham Field transformed Stuart into a vital node in the defense and aerospace industries.

While final assembly of the Tomcat took place in Calverton, New York, components critical to its performance—such as wing sections and control systems—were meticulously fabricated and tested right here in Martin County. The facility’s work directly supported front-line aviation, earning it a respected place in Grumman’s national operations.

Yet beyond the blueprints and hangars, Grumman cultivated a workforce that took immense pride in its mission. Employees became ambassadors of the company’s values, investing their time and talents into civic organizations like the Eagle Scouts and the Martin County Kiwanis Club—creating a ripple effect of leadership and service throughout the community.

Today, the Martin County Grumman Retirement Club continues to meet, nearly 25 years after the company’s departure, preserving the camaraderie and commitment that defined their time at Grumman. Their stories—filled with technical triumphs, personal milestones, and community impact—form a vital piece of aviation history that continues to inspire generations of enthusiasts and engineers alike.
