The Florida Highwaymen Mini-Display

The Highwaymen Story is about to get the Hollywood treatment with a new movie on the horizon. Premiering in the fall, join us for an in-depth look onto the lives of the men who painted the Florida countryside with such prolific intensity. Considering there is estimated to be upwards of 20k paintings in this collection, many of which were bought as a souvenir from a roadside stand as a family left a paradise vacation for home, these works are scattered across America.

The importance of these works in documenting vanished landscapes across Florida cannot be understated.  Spanning almost 70 years, this cast of characters and their influence on the Florida art culture is still felt today. From the Street Corner to the Smithsonian, The Elliott Museum will host a lush display of works alongside the movie screening this year. In the meantime, you can visit a mini display of works on loan from Roger Lightle, one of the foremost authorities on all things Highwaymen, on display now.
