Coral Reef Ecosystems: Linking Exploration to Conservation
About the Lecture
Worldwide, and here in Florida, coral reefs ecosystems are stunning ecological powerhouses that provide immense ecosystem services and economic impacts. Coral reefs protect our shorelines, provide important fisheries resources, drive thriving tourism economies, and may provide new treatments for human diseases. Through advances in both ocean exploration and molecular techniques, researchers at Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute are advancing the discovery, characterization, conservation, and restoration of our coral reef ecosystems. This presentation will focus on expeditions in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, Mesoamerica, and Cuba and include some of spectacular videos and images that not only drive science but inspire protection of these critical coral ecosystems.
