Martin County’s Coastal Program

Tuesday, December 8 | 2:00 PM

What does it take to protect Martin County’s beautiful coastline? From keeping our beaches healthy to managing inlets and maintaining artificial reefs, there’s a lot happening beneath the surface!

Join us at the Elliott Museum for an informative and engaging look at Martin County’s Coastal Program with Jessica Garland, the county’s Coastal Program Manager. Discover how beach nourishment helps protect our shoreline, why inlet dredging is essential, how living shorelines support coastal habitats, and what goes into managing artificial reefs beneath our waters.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
With more than 20 years of service to Martin County, Jessica brings extensive firsthand experience to this important topic. She oversees the county’s coastal program, which encompasses 22 miles of beach, St. Lucie Inlet management, the northern end of the Kristen Jacobs Coral Aquatic Preserve, and Martin County’s artificial reefs. Her work has also contributed to publications and interactive mapping projects focused on beach restoration, artificial reefs, and sea turtle nesting.

Born and raised in South Florida, Jessica understands the special connection our community has with the coast. When she’s not working to manage and protect these valuable coastal resources, she enjoys cooking and kayaking with her husband and sons.

Whether you’re a longtime local, a beach lover, or simply curious about what it takes to care for our coastal environment, this lecture offers a fascinating look at the work that helps preserve Martin County’s shoreline for generations to come.
