The Ben Franklin Submersible: A 30-Day Mission
About the Lecture
Many years ago, deep ocean exploration was done by ships using sensors sent deep into the water. In the 1960’s explorers began using manned submersibles for dives of just a few hours. Eventually, famed explorer Jacques Piccard, who believed that to really study the deep ocean it would be necessary to actually live there for a long period of time and in a comfortable environment, designed the Ben Franklin submersible. The presentation will touch on the design of the submarine followed by a review of the 30-day Gulfstream Drift Mission.
