Impressive instructor, artist and photographer, Carl Stoveland will engage participants in the steps of a well designed and executed watercolor painting of the House of Refuge beachside setting. The workshop will focus on shape, value and contrasts to create the finished paintings. Carl will give demos throughout the day to help solidify the concepts.

My typical plein air setup

Block watercolor paper, a folding aluminum palette setup with my colors and a pochade box type easel mounted to a tripod.

Our day at the beautiful House of Refuge will help you take your watercolors out of the studio and on location.

Here’s the structure of the workshop.

  • Once we are on location at the House of Refuge we will spend a few minutes going over composition options and importance of thumbnail sketches and value studies.
  • I will pick a location to work either North or South of the HoR depending on the light and the tide. We will spend the first 60-90 minutes with me drawing out my composition and putting in initial washes and showing the stages of my painting. Along the way I’ll show the concepts of working light to dark and big to small. These are key in watercolor.
  • I will talk a bit about the benefit of a limited palette of colors in plein air work.
  • Lunch break Students should plan for 30 minutes and should bring a bag lunch.
  • Students will select their locations and start working on their paintings.
  • I will walk amongst the students helping them create their paintings and guide them through any issues that arise.
  • At the end of the day we’ll line up our paintings and do a quick show and tell.
  • Wrap up and post workshop cocktail at the Tiki Bar.
  • Shuttle returns to the Elliott Museum at 2:30PM

Participants are required to provide their own supplies.
