About the 1926 Grumman Display
Grumman Aircraft Corporation came to Stuart in early1950s and leased much of Witham Field and designated it “Plant 77.” Plant 77 handled flight testing and manufacturing of parts and subassemblies for multiple defense platforms, notably including the U.S. Army’s OV-1 Mohawk as well as aircraft used by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Grumman’s presence turned Stuart into an important aviation hub but operations were downsized in 1994.
Today the airport operates as a general aviation field with over 200 private and business aircraft. Grumman is an important part of Stuart and Martin County history and the love and memories of it continue today with a comprehensive exhibit at the Elliott.
