The House of Refuge is one of Martin County’s most treasured landmarks — a place where history, beauty, and memory come together. Built in 1875, it is the oldest and most iconic building in Martin County and the last remaining of the ten original Houses of Refuge built along Florida’s east coast. The House has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974, standing as a symbol of endurance, hospitality, and coastal heritage.

By participating in our Name a Rocking Chair campaign, you can dedicate one of the rocking chairs on the historic porch overlooking the Indian River Lagoon. For a $500 donation, your name or the name of someone special, will be permanently displayed on a beautifully engraved 4” x 2” name plate with your personal message.
