The Men’s Show – the Martin Artisans Guild

April 11 through June 30

The Men’s Show: A Celebration of Artistry at the Elliott Museum

This spring, the Elliott Museum proudly presents The Men’s Show, an exclusive exhibition featuring the works of renowned artists James J. DeMartis and Curt Whiticar. Running from April 11 through June 30, this extraordinary showcase is brought to you by the Martin Artisans Guild and offers a rare glimpse into never-before-seen pieces from these celebrated creators.

Curated by Laura Kaye and John – Curt Whiticar’s children – Curt’s works serve as a figurative and exploratory anchor point between Demartis’s dreamy and romantic mindscapes. While we are familiar with Whiticar’s story here in Stuart, many people may be less familiar with Mr. Demartis’ works.

James is Barb Bucci’s father, and she and her two brothers have come together from three separate parts of the US to bring us individually curated works from this internationally known artist, many of which have never been shown in this area before now.

This intimate look into the works of two deeply appreciated fathers from the perspectives of their beloved children is a tribute to how two wildly differing styles of artistic expression can complement each other and intensify our appreciation for all styles of art.

A Unique Collection of Unveiled Masterpieces For the first time, art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience newly revealed works by DeMartis and Whiticar. Both artists have made a lasting impact in the world of fine art, and this exhibit provides a fresh perspective on their contributions. From intricate sculptures to evocative paintings, The Men’s Show is a tribute to their artistic legacies.

Art for Every Collector All works in the exhibit are available for purchase, making this a unique opportunity for collectors and admirers to acquire original pieces. Whether you are a seasoned collector or new to the art world, this showcase promises to offer something truly special.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

James J. DeMartis (1926–1996) was an American painter known for his evolution from impressionistic landscapes to abstract expressionism. A Purple Heart recipient, he studied at the Museum of Modern Art’s War Veteran Art Center and the Art Students League in New York before refining his craft in Florence, Italy. His works, blending romantic realism with dynamic abstraction, have been exhibited widely and continue to be collected today.

Curt Whiticar (1911–2017) was a renowned boat builder, fisherman, and self-taught artist based in Stuart, Florida. Founder of Whiticar Boat Works in 1947, he built custom sportfishing vessels known for their superior offshore performance. After retiring at 75, he devoted himself to painting, creating nearly 2,000 oil paintings that captured Florida’s landscapes, seascapes, and historical scenes. His work remains celebrated for its deep connection to the region’s maritime heritage.
