About the 1924 Ashley Hideaway in the Ashley Gang Exhibit

According to Ernest Lyons, editor of the Stuart News from 1944-1975, “John Ashley was our Jesse James.” Jphn H Ashley was born March 19, 1888 one pf nine children who grew up in Buckingham, FL. He spent much of his youth in the Florida Everglades and it proved later to be the site of his still and bootlegging. He was nicknamed “King of the Everglades”  during his crime-spree years from 1910-1924. Recreated here is his Everglades Hideaway.
