If you are a student of history, the newspaper is such a valuable resource.
Far from the days of going to the library to sort through the microfiche, today’s newspaper research is easier than ever although it comes with a paid subscription, like everything these days. Having access to first-hand information, in the context of which the average reader would have consumed it is a great way to understand the “vernacular” of an era.
This month I have researched topics relating to the Civil Rights movement in Florida, the histories of all three Seminole Wars, Samuel L. Margolies, the Illustrious Engraver and Engineer who lived in Jensen Beach and Frances Langford’s life and writings. I think context creates nuance and nuance evokes understanding. Which is just what we all long for!
I will leave you with the first few editions of The Purple Heart Diaries and I invite you to visit the Frances Langford Café upstairs at The Elliott, where we have a new dedication featuring her album, Frances Langford Sings Old Songs For Old Friends.
